The Atkins diet was found by Dr. Atkins in the late 1970s and has grown popular in recent years. What exactly is the Atkins diet?

The Atkins diet is primarily based on a concept of why we get fat. According to Dr. Atkins, we over-eat carbohydrates and simple sugars leads to weight gain. Our body digest the excessive carbohydrates into fat or calories. In his book, Atkins defines this state as “insulin resistance”. His theory is that these over-sized people have cells that do not function correctly. It is very important that one consult a nutritionist or a doctor before they begin on Atkins diet. When you consume excess sugar and carbohydrates, your body will increase the sugar levels. Insulin is slowly released from the pancreas in order to store sugar as glycogen in the liver and muscle cells for extra energy later on. However, your body can only keep so much glycogen at once. As soon as your body reaches its limit for glycogen storage, the excess carbohydrates are kept as fat. This happens to everyone who eats too much carbohydrates.

However, insulin resistant persons have a difficult time of using and storing excess carbohydrates. The more insulin that your body is introduced to, the more resistant it becomes. Over a period of time, the pancreas produces more insulin and cells become insulin resistant. The cells are trying to guard themselves from the toxic effects of high insulin. They product less glycogen and more fat.

As a result, insulin resistant persons gain extra weight. The carbohydrates is converted into fat instead of energy. The individual will also suffer from exhaustion, poor memory, loss of creativity, hypoglycemia, bloating, sleepiness, depression and increased blood sugar. When you are insulin resistant, you are exposed to other illness than just weight gain.

The cure for people who are insulin resistant is a food plan restricted in carbohydrates. The essence of the Atkins diet is a restriction of carbohydrates in all of its forms. Atkins plan restrict consumption of  cookies, sodas, bread, rice, sweets and grain. Even healthy carbohydrates such as oatmeal, whole wheat bread and brown rice are restricted on the program.

Carbohydrate intake should be less than 40 grams a day. This will put your body in a condition of ketosis. While in ketosis, your body will burn fat as fuel. According to Dr. Atkins’ study, the ketosis state will also impact insulin production and it will stop more fat from being formed. Your body will start using your stored fat as an efficient form of energy, and you’ll lose weight.

Atkins diet is a very strict regime that not many people enjoy or can stick to. It is only recommended if one suffers from insulin resistant. Why not try a safer, easier weight loss program and not restrict your diet as much.
